Historic Preservation Agency "Blindsided" by ALPLM Spinoff Proposal

Updated: Friday, May 30 2014, 03:54 PM CDT
ILLINOIS -- Top officials at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency say they were "blindsided" by a recent legislative proposal to spin off the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

In a statement, chairwoman Sunny Fischer asked the general assembly to delay House Speaker Michael Madigan's proposal until after trustees meet in June and provide input.

Madigan introduced the plan last week, saying it's necessary because the institution is held back by needing permission for its operations. The House approved the idea Tuesday.

Madigan also claims there would be no costs involved, but Fischer said the split would cost nearly $2 million and hinder joint programs currently underway. Historic Preservation Agency "Blindsided" by ALPLM Spinoff Proposal
