Icey Conditions Creating Problems for Homeowners

Updated: Tuesday, February 18 2014, 01:57 PM CST

The ice storm that blew through is creating big problems for some central Illinois homeowners. Ice is building up on roofs, blocking water from running off and causing serious damage. William Shryock with Sutton Siding and Remodeling says calls for roof damage from ice build-up are up at least 50% from most winters. More calls are expected as ice continues to melt and some people realize they have a leak in their roof. Costs to repair a damaged roof can range from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand depending on the damage.

William Shryock says, "If you're missing a couple shingles or there's a slight leak and small stain on the ceiling, that's no big deal, but if you get into a significant amount of ice damming like now. If you're not prepared for it and don't take extra precautions, you can suffer almost a total loss."

One way to try to prevent ice from damaging your roof? Keep your gutters clean. Experts advise that you should not go on to the roof yourself. Instead call a trained professional and your insurance agent. If you do notice a leak in your roof experts say it's best to get it fixed as soon as possible to prevent moisture build-up which could lead to mold.
