Illinois School Funding Reform

Updated: Wednesday, August 20 2014, 05:21 PM CDT

LOCAL STUDENTS WITH AMBITIOUS GOALS
ARE NOT RECEIVING THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AS OTHER ILLINOIS STUDENTS ... THANKS TO UNFAIR FUNDING.
THIS  -- ACCORDING TO LOCAL LAWMAKERS WHO SAY A BILL CURRENTLY IN THE HOUSE ...
COULD LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD.

SENATOR ANDY MANAR PROPOSED A BILL THAT WOULD RE-CALCULATE
HOW ILLINOIS SCHOOL DISTRICTS WOULD RECEIVE STATE FUNDS.
SPRINGFIELD DISTRICT 1-86 WAS FORCED TO MAKE $5-MILLION DOLLARS IN CUTS THIS YEAR
TO BALANCE THEIR BUDGET.
SUPERINTENDENT JENNIFER GILL SAYS...  PASSING THIS BILL WOULD HELP ENORMOUSLY.
BUT IT TOOK A YEAR OF DEBATE...  BEFORE FINALLY PASSING IN THE SENATE THIS SPRING,
NOW IT HEADS TO THE HOUSE...  WHERE IT COULD FACE ADDITIONAL CHANGES.

"My response has been I think it's great. Let's get involved, let's ammend the bill accordingly, but at the end of the day doing nothing is not an option. Something has to change in Illinois."
"I'm hoping that the other representatives will see the injustices and be willing to step up to the plate and do the right thing. We're not asking for anyone to have more than anyone else, we're just asking for it to be fair and even for everyone."

STATE REPRESENTATIVE SUE SCHERER --A FORMER TEACHER--
SAYS THE CURRENT SYSTEM UNFAIRLY BENEFITS SUBURBAN CHICAGO SCHOOLS.
SHE ADDS --  IT'S FRUSTRATING TO SEE STUDENTS IN OUR AREA WITH THE SAME CAREER GOALS
 NOT RECEIVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES.
