Improvements for I-55 and I-72 Coming

Updated: Wednesday, June 4 2014, 03:32 PM CDT
The Illinois Department of Transportation is taking a closer look at ways to improve traffic and flow on Interstate-55 and Interstate-72 around Springfield.

The area they're looking at is the 6th Street interchange to the North Sherman Interchange.

"At that split it's just terrible both ways," said Chris Cobert.

"Early morning traffic, and afternoon traffic, it's really congested," said Erika Thompson

Those are common complaints for those using Interstate-55 and Interstate-72 during traffic hours in the Springfield area.

IDOT is currently studying the area to evaluate the capacity of the roadway and the interchanges while also determining the need for extra lanes.

Drivers who use the interstate everyday say they need an extra lane because merging causes people to speed to get ahead.

"From 6th Street going south, and then going each way on 72, then let alone coming back if you're coming from the west side. It's a drag race out there," said Cobert.

Some of IDOT's Proposals include adding another lane of traffic both ways and reconfiguring interchanges to meet new safety requirements.

"Early morning traffic, afternoon traffic, and it is very congested. I think if they had three lanes it would ease up the congestion, of course, and the accidents possibly. Make it run smoother," said Thompson.

Since the interstate was constructed in the 50s the number of cars that use it everyday has almost doubled.

IDOT's next steps are to pick a plan that's cost effective while also solving the traffic issues.

They will then send the plan to the Federal Highway Administration for approval.
