ISP and IDOT Raise Awareness On Booster Seat Safety

Updated: Monday, May 19 2014, 09:39 AM CDT
The Illinois State Police have partnered with the Illiinois Department of Traffic to start a booster seat education and distribution program.  The purpose is to increase awareness of the importance of children being fastened properly while in a vehicle.

IDOT says many parents are moving their toddlers directly from a car seat to a seat belt too soon and skipping over the booster seat phase.

They say this increases the likelihood of injury or death after a crash.

"Most parents would not knowingly put their child at risk, so I have to believe that when a family thinks, I'm just going to the store, so we're just going to slap a seat belt on it and not grab a booster seat out of the other car..they don't truly understand the severity of the injuries or the potential fatalities that could be there just from running to the grocery store." Jennifer Toney, Occupant Protection Coordinator for IDOT said.
