Lawmakers Push for a Veteran Suicide Task Force

Updated: Tuesday, June 17 2014, 10:42 AM CDT

ILLINOIS -- A handful of lawmakers are looking into setting up a task force for veteran suicides.

There are more than 50 sponsors on the piece of legislation to create such a task force.

The legislation passed the house, but was not taken up in the senate.

A veterans affairs report from earlier this year showed that suicide among veterans health administration patients was higher than Americans as a whole.

"They're the reason that we have the wonderful country that we have with our free democracy, and that they put their life on the line. And anything we can ever do to help them is more than important."

Under the proposals Scherer is backing, the task force would include representatives from state agencies that serve veterans and examine the issue of suicide among Illinois veterans.

It would be responsible for making recommendations regarding veteran suicide, including any possible legislation.
