Local Bomb Dog Retires

Updated: Monday, August 4 2014, 11:19 AM CDT

CHAMBANA -- After 10 years of valiant service, a University of Illinois Police Officer is honoring and relieving his partner of duty.

His K-9 partner, that is. Nala has been a bomb sniffing dog at the University of Illinois Police Department assisting Officer Troy Chew at all of the Illini football and basketball games, concerts, and speaking events, as well as Board of Trustee meetings.

Nala will be spending the rest of her retirement with Officer Chew while he trains a new dog to take her place.

"Actually I'll be gone for a month, training with the new dog. And it's anywhere y'know a lot of guys with the dog, with the handlers, it's classes are from 4 to 8 weeks. So, I'll be gone for four weeks in training with the new dog."

Officer Chew tells us that he loved working with Nala at the football games the most. And he's looking forward to having Nala back home as a pet.
