Madigan Denies Friends Driving Lincoln Library Plan

Updated: Friday, May 30 2014, 03:53 PM CDT
ILLINOIS -- Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is denying claims that personal friendships are driving his proposal to make the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum a separate state agency.

A House committee approved the idea to break off the facility from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

Madigan confirms he is a friend of library and museum director Eileen Mackevich and her longtime friend, who runs a museum in Chicago. But Madigan says he has not been lobbied by either to make the management change.

In published reports, Mackevich said the library and museum would be stronger as a stand-alone agency, and has no personality clash with the director of the preservation agency.
