Major Delays for Amrak Train Passengers

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 02:50 PM CDT
Senator Dick Durbin is urging Amtrak officials and surface transportation board members to resolve issues causing major rail delays. Durbin discussed the problem while in Champaign today. According to the senator, Amtrak's chicago-champaign-carbondale route is one of the most delayed train routes in the nation. Because of the travel troubles the S.T.B. is being tasked with investigating the Canadian National Freight railroad's role in the delays. The senator says that is a vital means of transportation.

"Our success is threatened when the trains we have today are not reliable or on time.  Many of you have experienced the frustration of being stuck behind a freight train or staring out the window while the train crawls across the crossing.  Those problems made the Chicago-Champaign-Carbondale route the most delayed train route of it's kind in America," says Senator Dick Durbin.

S.T.B. Chairman Dan Elliott is holding meetings throughout Illinois to hear concerns associated with the rail delays. Also in attendance today was Champaign Mayor Don Gerard and university of Illinois chancellor Phyllis Wise. Both commenting on how valuable the means of transportation is for local residents and international students as well. Amtrak has filed one complaint against Canadian National and plans to file more complaints.
