Man Being Questioned Over Attempted Child Abductions

Updated: Wednesday, July 9 2014, 03:02 PM CDT

Police are questioning a man accused of trying to kidnap kids in our area. Over the holiday weekend, police in Macoupin county got three reports of a man trying to abduct children near their homes.

Thankfully, no kids were actually kidnapped or hurt; but that's not stopping authorities from trying to keep it from happening again.

One of the incidents was near Jason Pilger's home in Benld. He has three kids.

"This whole area is full of kids around here. It's scary," Pilger said.

Christina Henley lives down the street. She said, "I won't let my kids outside until I get home. It's just scary."

Two incidents were reported in Benld; one in Gillespie. Illinois State Police is now handling the investigation.

"We treat child abduction very seriously," said Trooper Emanuel Edwards.

Investigators have tracked down the man accused of approaching kids near their home.  He's described as a thin white man, about 5-feet 8 inches tall and driving a late 90's gold Ford pick-up with a lawn mower in the bed. Police say he's from Macoupin county and is cooperating with the investigation; but so far, no charges have been filed.

As the investigation continues, authorities are asking all parents to remind your kids about stranger danger.

Trooper Edwards, a safety education officer with ISP, said, "The people who try to abduct children know what they like... like candy, games, toys, whatever it is. So it's important parents take time to talk with their kids. Do a little role play, a scenario so they know what to do and what not to do when approached by a stranger... Things like that make a world of difference."

Parents aren't the only ones with a role. Illinois State Police recommends anybody report any suspicious people, vehicles or activity in your neighborhood to local authorities.
