Old Buildings Means More Costs For District 186

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 09:41 AM CDT
SPRINGFIELD -- District 186 has more than 30 schools and about a dozen of them are at least 100 years old. One of those schools includes the Iles School which was built in 1905, making it one of the oldest buildings in the district.

When crews tried to install new equipment the existing support structures couldn't handle the weight, requiring additional resources to be brought in right away. It cost the district an additional $120,000.

Superintendent Jennifer Gill says unexpected extra costs are something the district plans for when making construction bids.

"We had to do a change order that was over the amount that usually we come but it had to happen right away and this is a very old building some sometimes things that we can't see in the previous bid happen when we dig into an old building such as that," said Superintendent Gill.

The money for the upgrades came from a health, life and safety bond which won't impact the districts finances.

At a school board meeting Monday night, there were also some staff changes announced.

The board approved an unexpected resignation of the principal at Southern View Elementary due to family reasons. Robert Mitchell has been named interim principal.Old Buildings Means More Costs For District 186
