Updated: Thursday, May 15 2014, 12:35 PM CDT

SPRINGFIELD -- The Old Capitol Farmers Market begins the 2014 season Wednesday, May 14 in Springfield, Illinois.

Located in downtown Springfield, specifically the stretch of Adams Street between 5th and 2nd, the Old Capitol Farmers Market hosts three full blocks of booths from 50 vendors, as listed here, selling a wide variety of foods and specialty items originating in the area.

Items such as produce, meats, cheeses, breads and other baked goods, plants, local art etc. will be available for purchase from vendors via cash, check, WIC and Senior Coupons.

New to this year, the Market now accepts LINK, debit or credit card transactions in exchange for a "market coin" ($1 each) at the Market Token Station at Development Services Group (401 E. Adams or the NE corner of 4th & Adams).

While prepping for tomorrow's event, Wesley King, Executive Director of Illinois Stewardship Alliance (ISA) says, "We are excited about the kickoff of another season of the Old Capitol Farmers Market and want people in Springfield to know that this is a great opportunity to buy fresh, local fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs... produced by local farmers here in central Illinois. This is a great way to eat healthy and support your local economy, community. Our mantra is 'Buy fresh, Buy local' and there's no better way to do that than at the Old Capitol Farmer's Market.

A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the start of the season will commence at 10:00am.

Mayor Michael Houston will be present as a special guest. Deep Hollow will provide live music. Chef Michael Higgins of Maldaner's will provide a Celebrity Chef Demonstration.

Incredibly Delicious will be offering FREE cake (while it lasts).

The market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays through October from 8:00am to 12:30pm.
