Proposed Legislation Would Give DUI Offenders Another Chance

Updated: Thursday, February 20 2014, 10:34 AM CST

UPDATED February 19, 3:00 p.m.
Democratic Rep. Elaine Nekritz is proposing a law that would give repeat DUI offenders another chance.

The proposal would allow people who have four DUI convictions to apply for a restricted drivers' permit. Restricted permit holders are required to permanently install a breathalyzer in their vehicle, and are only allowed to drive at certain times and to certain places, like work and church.

Currently, Illinois drivers with three DUI convictions can apply for these restricted permits. Drivers with four DUI convictions have their licenses permanently revoked.
