Rules of the Flag

Updated: Tuesday, May 27 2014, 10:32 AM CDT
NATIONAL --

On this patriotic holiday, it's important to know how to maintain your flag in the most respectful way.

Back in 1942 Congress passed a joint resolution outlining when
the flag should be displayed, how it should be displayed, and how it
should be destroyed.

If your flag is ripped, torn, or the colors are faded, the
Veterans of Foreign Wars asks that you retire those stars and stripes.

"We're happy to take your flags and we have a ceremony," said
Kenneth Crotchett of the VFW.  "We go by the book and burn the flag and
treat it with the upmost respect.  American Legion is happy to take your
flag.  Almost any military organization, veterans organization [are]
very happy to take the flag, put it with the rest of them and honorably
discharge it."

Aside from its condition, it's also important to make sure your
flag is waving in the right direction, where the stars are on the left
and the stripes are on the right.
