Sangamon County Medical Society Gets $60k Donation

Updated: Thursday, May 15 2014, 04:15 PM CDT

The Sangamon County Medical Society and Alliance Foundation is getting a big funding boost to help young people to achieve their goals.

The family of Dr. Alonzo H. Kenniebrew donated $60,000 in memory of their father and mother. The donation will help with student programs. For example, one program is the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program, an after-school program for students interested in becoming physicians.

"The family has said that they are open to whatever we are interested in doing with the money, as long as it goes to students and education," medical society executive director Carol Harms said."So they're wanting to just honor their father's memory and helping other students that are interested in going in the field of medicine as well."

The program is open to all high school students from Springfield schools. This donation will help fund the one-time monetary scholarship that will be given to graduates of the program going into their first year of college.
