Securing Lawmaker Paychecks

Updated: Tuesday, June 3 2014, 05:15 PM CDT
ILLINOIS -- Lawmakers passed a roughly 35.7 billion dollar budget for 2015 last night. The Illinois legislature also passed a measure last night that would prevent their salaries from being stopped in the future. The plan would require lawmakers to get a continuing appropriation of their salaries promised to them when they were elected.

Just last summer, Governor Quinn used his veto power to eliminate lawmakers' salaries saying the move was a way to push lawmakers to reach consensus on a statewide pension overhaul. Lawmakers say this legislation is an attempt to make sure the governor doesn't try it again.
