Several States Stop Selling Some Types of Mulch

Updated: Monday, May 19 2014, 03:58 PM CDT

A number of states have banned the sale of some types of mulch because most of it is not really mulch.

This is one of the brands of mulch the Ohio Department of Agriculture wants pulled from store shelves..

"Through the stor order, we want people to be aware of the issues."

37 different brands of mulch distributed by Ohio Mulch. Ohio, now joining Michigan and Illinois in stopping the sale of these products. The state says its inspectors randomly tested bags of mulch and found the two and three cubic foot bags of mulch tested did not contain the correct amount.

"We had hope to avoid coming to this point and tried to come up with a solution, but we weren't seeing progress and changes being implemented."

And while the stop sale order was issued Friday morning. We are still able to buy one of the mulch bags in question at a local store. The state tells me it will continue to randomly test mulch products because it's tough for consumers to do it themselves.

"They have a calibrated three foot box where they dump in the mulch and make sure the mulch is fluffed and make it like it's spread on your landscape."
