Signs of Racial Bias In Traffic Stops

Updated: Friday, August 15 2014, 09:45 AM CDT
ILLINOIS -- A new report finds signs of racial bias during police searches and traffic stops in Illinois.

The Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union released the report Wednesday. It says police are twice as likely to ask blacks and Latinos to consent to vehicle searches during traffic stops than whites.

But white drivers are 49 percent more likely than blacks to have contraband, and 56 percent more likely than Latinos.

The analysis is based on figures reported by law enforcement agencies in 2013, under the Illinois Traffic Stop Statistical Study Act.Signs of Racial Bias In Traffic Stops
