Simon Talks Waterways, Challanges Topinka

Updated: Monday, August 11 2014, 11:34 AM CDT
Someone else who is running for office, albeit a little sooner, is Lieutenant Gov. Sheila Simon. She's spending the day with engineers at the state fairgrounds.

The group gathered to discuss the condition of the state's water trails and access to waterways.

Recently, Illinois barely received a passing grade on the state's infrastructure report card. That's why they're looking to improve problems on the Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio and Wabash Rivers.

But they say it'll take more than just this group to improve the river systems in Illinois.

"I think one of the challenges when you deal with ricers in particular is that there are so many folks involved," Simon said. "Usually, a river is a border between two different political units, and it takes a little more cooperation to get everyone working together, so that is part of what this group does, is to bring these folks together."

Simon, a Democrat, is challenging Republican incumbent Judy Baar Topinka, for the state comptroller seat. She says she isn't phased by a recent poll that shows her trailing Topinka.

Simon says it's the same poll that put Bruce Rauner 17 points ahead the day before he won a closely-decided Republican gubernatorial primary. Simon Talks Waterways, Challanges Topinka
