Teamsters Buck Against Patronage Layoffs

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 02:49 PM CDT
ILLINOIS -- The pending layoffs of dozens of people in positions hired to positions decried in a recent report as patronage jobs, is going to cause the Quinn administration another problem.

Fifty-five of the 58 "staff assistants" are teamster union members and the union's lawyer says the union is pushing back. The same way it did when former Gov. Rod Blagojevich tried eliminating political patronage jobs in 2003.

"It was a - quote - 'material reorganization' then," says Don Craven, an attorney for Teamsters Local 916. "It's a quote, 'material reorganization' now, and we're probably going to spend several million more dollars of the state money - that we don't have - and they'll end up going back to work or being compensated for their losses."

In a statement, an IDOT spokesman said "This is not part of a targeted layoff of particular individuals, but rather a policy decision - a material reorganization of the agency to reflect the fact that staff assistant work, as codified, is not being done or needed within the agency."Teamsters Buck Against Patronage Layoffs
