Tips to Saving on School Supplies

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 02:53 PM CDT

Now that kids are back in school, you'll soon be tasked with the cost of school projects.

According to the National Retail Federation, there's already a sharp increase, in the number of school supplies kids need and that means more money.
Newschannel at Nine's Kimberly Howard explains how you can send your kids back to school on a budget.

"We're going to head right to the back."
"Is that a good place to start in general?"
"That is typically a good place to start..."
Armed with a list for an Albany third grader, we start our back to school savings mission. Everything from notebooks to disinfecting wipes.

"So what's the grand total?"

"The grand total today is going to be $28.80."
That's just for school supplies. And just for one kid.
The National Retail Federation says the average family is expected to spend more than $660 on everything back-to-school.

"I think it's very true because once you start factoring in clothes, shoes, sneakers."

"Prices have gone up it's tough times."

"Seems like a lot of money but the schools require more and more stuff."

"The key is the fliers."

Meet Andrea McMaster, the coupon lady.

"You could get that down to 300."

She can cut your back-to-school shopping bill in half.

"Unbelievable. Just by doing this?"
"Yeah just by doing this."

She spends time sifting, clipping, and clicking, searching sites like

"It's all about price matching and your coupons."

If you round up your coupons, most big box stores will honor the lowest price. Even if you find that lowest price later.

"You have maybe a two week to four week time period to do that."
Staples will even take off an additional 10%.
You can also save money and time with smartphone applications like "Retail Me Not."

"And it has just about every store you can imagine and it lists all the deals for those stores."

"You can search it right in line."

Don't forget to look for rebates.

"So you can go and purchase it and you can pay up front and then you apply for the rebate and they send you the check in the mail."

But don't spend it all in one place! And depending, not all at one time.

"You know it's funny because at the end of this back-to-school season, a lot of stores do a clearance and you're going to be able to get glue, glue sticks, pencils for like a quarter or below. So you might want to stock up at the end of the season, too, so that you do have it in your house for next back-to-school season."
