Unique Features in New Springfield Hy-Vee

Updated: Thursday, May 15 2014, 10:57 AM CDT

After nearly 11 months and $21 million in construction, Hy-Vee in Springfield has finally opened for business.

Hundreds of people were already at the store when its doors opened to the public at 6 a.m. today.

Hy-Vee isn't your typical grocery store. It includes a wide range of unique features, from a full-service restaurant called Market Grille to a bakery and Chinese and Italian specialty kitchens. There are also eight in-store chefs, and dieticians available to walk with customers and help them select healthy foods as they shop. That's something that comes in handy if you have severe food allergies.

"So many times you see a dietician on the other end," registered dietician Charlyn Fargo Ware said. "Maybe you've been to the hospital, or diagnosed with diabetes. We want to get you on the front end. Let's do some preventative work. Let's do some healthy eating so you don't have to end up in the hospital."

The store manager at Hy-Vee called the grocery store a one-stop shop. Aside from the full-service restaurant, customers can enjoy an internet cafe with five flat-screen TVs, or drop their clothes off at Hy-Vee's dry-cleaning service while shopping.

The store is open 24 hours a day.
