UPDATE: Ready, Set, Shred

Updated: Thursday, May 8 2014, 04:40 PM CDT

SPRINGFIELD -- The scandal, involving the destruction of Springfield Police Internal Affairs documents that's led to a state led investigation on whether the city of Springfield, and/or the Springfield Police Department, broke any laws.

Newschannel at Nine's Vince Dementri with the latest developments on "Ready, Set, Shred"

Those police internal affairs documents that were destroyed were under a freedom of information request at the time.

Now the Illinois State's Attorney Appellate Prosecutor's Office got the case nearly a year ago with the help of the Illinois State Police.

In that time, both agencies have remained fairly mum on the status. That is until we asked the Appellate Prosecutor's Office for an on camera interview regarding the case.

Its Director Patrick Delfino declined an on-camera interview, but he did released this statement:

"The Illinois State Police has recently completed its extensive investigation and provided our agency with all case files. Our mission now is to conclude this case review in a timely, comprehensive and proficient manner."

You'll remember that even before our series of reports concluded, then Police Chief Robert Williams announced his retirement. Former Lead City Attorney Mark Cullen tendered his resignation. Assistant City Attorney Geannette Wittendorf was intitially reassigned then fired early January. And former Police Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher, who stood to be the next chief and who's internal affairs file was at the heart of our investigation, retired a few weeks after Wittendorf was fired in mid-January.

Depending on what the Appellate Prosecutor's investigation finds, any or all could face criminal charges.

We will continue to keep an eye on this developing situation and bring you the latest.
