U.S. Military Action in Iraq

Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 11:47 PM CDT

Prime Time Announcement of Iraq Humanitarian Mission.

President Barrack Obama takes to the airwaves making a surprise announcement on attacks in Iraq. Thousands of families are reportedly trapped in the mountains of Iraq's Kurdish region. Many facing possible slaughter at the hands of extremists. Tonight President Barack Obama takes a stand and authorizes air strikes in Iraq if wrong steps are made by ISIS.

Authorized 2 operations in Iraq .... one in support of humanitarian relief efforts and another directing our military to take targeted strikes against terrorist convoys, should they move toward Irbil.

Obama saying that "[he] intend[s] to stay vigilant and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in Iraq, including our consulate in Irbil and our embassy in Baghdad."

ISIL, also known as ISIS and the Islamic state, swept through Iraq earlier this year, seizing military hardware and overrunning many cities and villages. The United Nations estimates as many as 200,000 people have fled toward Kurdistan over the last 48 hours.
