Van Attack Near U of I

Updated: Tuesday, May 13 2014, 10:11 AM CDT

URBANA -- Police are hitting the streets searching for suspects in a mob attack that happened near the U of I campus.

Police tell us that's where a University of Illinois student was beaten and robbed by upwards of 10 people.

Police say it happened around 9:45pm Thursday night in a residential neighborhood on Main Street, not far from campus.

Urbana authorities say the student was walking alone when a group of 7 to 10 people jumped out of a van and began throwing rocks at him.

Then police say the suspects beat up the student and stole several of his personal items.

"I'm really frustrated about it because I don't think, as a student, you should be fearful about walking to class or going back to your apartment or something on campus."

"And for it to happen, like a couple blocks down the street from a bus stop, that's very scary especially since I live off the bus and I have to walk like a few minutes to get to my apartment."

After the attack, the suspects got back into their van and drove off. It's not clear if the victim was trageted as Urbana police continue investigating.
