Woman Dies After Colliding With Train

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 10:10 AM CDT

CHAMPAIGN -- The incident happened shortly before 1:00am in the 3200 block of Cardinal Road. Investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly happened.

The Champaign County Coroner identified the woman as 52-year-old Diane Siewart of Champaign.

Champaign County Sheriff's say Siewart was driving west on Cardinal Road near Duncan when she somehow collided with a passing train on the Norfolk southern tracks.

Officers say someone driving in the area discovered Siewert's vehicle sometime after the crash. It's unknown if the train operator even knew the accident occurred.

Meanwhile the Sheriff's Office says you should always be careful when passing through railroad tracks.

"The biggest thing is be aware of your surroundings. If you're on a road you're unfamiliar with, don't travel that road if it's dark and you're not familiar with it. Stick to roads you are familiar with. At that time of night, like you said it's very dark out," says Lt. BRIAN MENNENGA of the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say it was somewhat foggy at the time of the accident but it's unknown if fog was a contributing factor.

Also, at this particular railroad crossing, there are no gates or lights.
