IDOT, Farm Bureau Promote Rural Road Safety

With planting season right around the corner, IDOT is teaming up with the Illinois Farm Bureau and state police to encourage drivers to slow down when traveling on rural roads.

IDOT said traffic accidents are the second-leading cause of farm-related deaths since 2008.

"If you're out on the rural roads, just be aware that this equipment's big," Bill Graff of the Illinois Beef Association Board said. "This equipment does move slow. It probably moves slower than what you think."

"Over the past five years or so, we've had about 29 fatal accidents involving farm machinery," John Hawkins of the Illinois Farm Bureau said.

Drivers and farmers will see banners on rural roads reminding them to be aware of each other. Slowing down and paying more attention can help save lives
