Ameren Selling Five Illinois Power PlantsHouston-based power producer Dynegy is buying five coal-powered plants in Illinois from Ameren. Those plants are located in Montgomery and Jasper counties, as well as three other plants across the state. No money will exchange hands. Instead, Dynegy will take over $825 million in debt from Ameren in order to take over the plants. The sale will make Dynegy the largest owner of coal-fired plants in Illinois. An Ameren spokesperson said the sale will allow them to focus solely on electric, natural gas, and power transmission operations. The companies expect the acquisition to close later this year.
