Students and staff are mourning the loss of a local teacher after a traffic accident in Coles County over the weekend. A group of local special education teachers and administrators were leaving Mattoon around 8:30 pm Saturday (3/2) night to head back to the Springfield area when they were hit by an alleged drunk driver.

According to a press release sent out by the Mattoon Police Department, nine people out of the four vehicles sustained injuries, including Special Education Teacher Amy Thomas of Springfield, who was killed in the crash.

The accident was caused by 25-year-old Michael Fogarty, of Chicago, who was ticketed for failure to reduce speed, DUI and no seatbelt.
