DIRT Team Makes Another Marijuana BustThe return of the DIRT team in Sangamon County is continuing to produce results. Their latest takedown is a marijuana bust in the capital city.
Officers with the Sangamon County Drug Interdiction Response Team (DIRT), found more than 100 marijuana plants in a home in the 200-block of North English. There, they also found growing materials, lights, fertilizer, drug paraphernalia, a scale, and nearly $2,000.
While deputies say the suspect, James Merrifield, was only a moderate marijuana grower, they say this bust sends a major message.
"This is just exactly the type of operation that the DIRT team was put back together to go after," Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson said. "The neighborhood nuisance. Not a major player, but he's one of these guys in the neighborhood that we get calls on where neighbors say they see cars going all night long. These type of businesses need to be shut down."
Williamson is warning other drug dealers in the area to take note.
Meanwhile, Merrifield has been charged with production and possession of more than 50 marijuana plants and possession of marijuana more than 500 grams.
