Faith, economy, moral values guide Illinois voters at polls

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois voters are guided by a variety of interests and values when it comes to deciding which presidential candidate gets their nod.

Voters’ responses to a question on the Illinois Watchdog Facebook page paint the picture. Faith, moral and social values, the country’s debt, jobs and the economy and concerns about national security are some of the most important factors in their decision, they said.

“Righting the economic ship. All social issues expire in the flames of a collapsing economy,” Rod Briggs wrote about what guided his decision.

Sue Matthies said she was looking for a candidate who can learn from the past.

“A president who will appreciate the wisdom and sacrifices of those that came before us, who will protect our Constitution and preserve our sovereignty as a nation under God,” she wrote.

“Marriage equality and the way the government spends my money,” responded Sergio Mendez Diaz.

And for small-business owner Jay Sheehan, it’s a little bit of everything.

“I want government out of my life, other than what they are allowed in the law – not what they decide to interpret it as,” he wrote. “Goodbye, Mr. Obama. And to Mr. Romney: You will be held accountable for your actions. I wish Democrats would do the same to their ‘leaders.’”
