Report: Former IDOT official got friends NASCAR tickets

By Anthony Brino | Illinois Statehouse News

SPRINGFIELD — A former Illinois Department of Transportation official used his position to get free NASCAR tickets, a report says.

The Illinois Office of the Executive Inspector General disclosed the report Wednesday. In it, Michael Stout, former director of IDOT's traffic safety division, is accused of using his position to get passes to the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet in 2009 and 2010 for him and six people who did not work for IDOT.

Stout tried to argue they were representing the department, the report says.

Stout resigned in December after the inspector general found he failed to disclose his secondary employment as business manager of a local branch of the Illinois State Employees Association, mischarged the state for 92 hours of work and used a state car for personal trips.

The inspector general is recommending that state prosecutors review the case to determine whether Stout should face criminal charges.
