White Proposes Stronger DUI LawsThousands of people are arrested in Illinois each year on DUI charges. Secretary of State Jesse White wants to strengthen DUI laws, and he's ready to take the matter to the general assembly. White met with his advisory committee on traffic safety issues today. During the meeting, he stressed how he wants to change laws against DUI offenders. White wants to expand the Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device program. This program installs breathalyzers in cars driven by motorists with DUIs. Right now, the device is only required in all vehicles first-time DUI offenders drive. White wants the requirement to include second- and third-time offenders as well. "We started out with about 3,000 individuals who had received the BAIDD device, and now we're up to about 12,000, which makes our roads a lot safer," White said. White also wants mandatory jail time for individuals caught driving in a car without the device. Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Allegiance Against Intoxicated Motorists support the secretary of state's proposal. Story by NewsChannel20.
