County Market Opens 100th Store

The new County Market in downtown Springfield opened yesterday (3/7) at Second and Carpenter streets. A large crowd gathered at the store for the grand opening ceremony at noon.

Mayor Mike Houston took the podium, talking about how the area has long been seen as a food desert.

Construction on the store started last June, after aldermen approved $2 million in TIF financing for the land.

Shoppers said having a big grocery store in the neighborhood will make a difference.

"It just seems like it's just completely forgotten for the people in this area--southwest," shopper Jane Barry said. "So I think it's a good thing."

The project cost about $8 million. There are 120 employees at the new store.

Overall, there are more than 800 County Market employees in the Springfield area.

This is County Market's 100th store.
