Former Waverly Cop Arrested

A former central Illinois police officer is on the other side of the law, charged with sex crimes involving a minor.

Jeremy Angelo, 29, of Chatham is charged with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which are both felonies.

Angelo was arrested Saturday night. He worked part-time with the Waverly Police Department before submitting his resignation late last week.

According to the Morgan County State's Attorney's office, the victim is a teenage girl between 13 and 18 years old. Waverly police officials came across something suspicious and called Illinois State Police to investigate. Police interviewed the victim, then Angelo. Angelo reportedly gave an audio statement, and was arrested.

The former officer has been released from jail on $100,000 bond until he returns to court April 16. A condition of his bond is to have no contact with the teenage victim.
