Petersburg Man Charged With Moving Dead Body

UPDATED March 20 at 6:28 p.m.

A Springfield man is dead and a Petersburg man is behind bars as an investigation in Menard County unfolds.

The Menard County Sheriff’s Office said while this is not a murder case, a crime was committed and the man who is behind bars in connection to all this is charged with something that happened after the trigger was pulled.

It was in Sweetwater early Tuesday morning when 20-year-old Aaron Fehl was found dead.

“He died of what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds,” Menard County Sheriff Charles Jones said.

But it was hours before deputies and Illinois State Police got wind of what happened.

“Menard County deputies along with the Illinois state police responded to a residence on the east side of Sweetwater in reference to a shots fired call," Jones said.

Jones said the 911 call came in from Sangamon County around 4 a.m. He said the several people who were on the other end of that phone did not call police right away.

"That's not exactly that uncommon," Jones said. "We have that happen quite a bit where someone will hear something or see something and not yet decide to make a phone call."

Deputies said when they got to the home near the corner of Sweetwater Avenue and Engel Street they found no victim, at least not right away.

“The body was not on scene," Jones said. "The body was a short distance away from the residence."

The residence 39-year-old Charlie Brackhan owns is now a crime scene authorities say Brackhan disturbed.

“The defendant himself is charged with moving the body of Aaron Fehl, a person who died by other than homicidal means, with intent of concealing information about the place of the death," Menard County State’s Attorney Ken Baumgarten said.

Investigators will not say where the body was moved, but they do say the gunshot wounds Fehl died from were not self-inflicted. They are also not calling this case a homicide.

“Two weapons were recovered at the scene," Jones said. "I'm not--I don't want to go into exactly the specifics on the weapons but two weapons were recovered at the scene."

Other than that deputies are tight-lipped as they wait for Brackhan to have his day in court.

Baumgarten said if convicted on just for the Concealment of a Death charge Brackhan could spend three years in jail.

Brackhan is being held on $100,000 bond. He is due back in court May 6.

The body found in Sweetwater Tuesday has been identified as Aaron P. Fehl, 20, of Springfield.

Menard County authorities say Charles Brackhan, 39, of Petersburg is charged with one count of concealment of a body.

Authorities are not calling this a homicide investigation at this time--only a death investigation.

UPDATED WITH VIDEO March 20 at 11:00 a.m.

Authorities in Menard County found a body near the rural town of Sweetwater Tuesday after responding to a call for shots fired.

Menard County Sheriff Chuck Jones said the call came from a home just east of Sweetwater.

The body of a man was later found near that residence.

Right now, all the sheriff will say is he considers the death suspicious. Menard County authorities are working with state police and the state's attorney's office.

The name of the victim is not being released until police notify family.
