Francis: First Latin American, First Jesuit Pope

The Roman Catholic church has a new leader. Cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, to be the next pope. He comes from Argentina. He's the first Jesuit to become pontiff. He's also the first pope from Latin America.
 
Latin America is home to the largest share of the world's more than 1 billion Catholics. Bergoglio is credited with modernizing an Argentine church that has been among the most conservative institutions in the region.
 
He's the first pope from outside Europe in modern history. 
 

In Rome, 115 Catholic cardinals from around the world formed the secretive conclave electing the successor to Benedict XVI. After the fifth ballot, white smoke billowed from the chimney on the Sistine Chapel, signifying to all the world that a new pope has been chosen.
