The University of Illinois Hires Ohio Head Coach John Groce
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, that proud old girl, has hired a new head coach according to multiple sources. John Groce, welcome to the family.
Jeff Goodman at CBS sports as well as the Chicago Sun Times both are reporting that the deal is done and that a press conference is likely tomorrow.
However...there is still no confirmation from the University.
OK, yeah! A head coach!
Our long national nightmare is over? Well...not yet...
Look, I've dumped on Groce on Twitter a ton already. I'm not a fan of the hire, I wasn't a big fan of his team (I didn't think they were that good), and I think the hire is being over-sold to me, the University and the public.
So, take that with a grain of salt.
However, with the reports of Groce's hire being official, comes several tweets from the Ohio Bobcats team -- including star Walter Offutt -- stating that everyone seems to know this as confirmed but that no one told them.
They also put quotes around the "us," as in, this sucks for "us". I would assume that is a poke at any fan that talks about the team they follow as a we. As I'm sure we all do. I know I do it. But it brings to light a truth that we tend to forget -- these are young kids that are being spurned rather publicly. They can't feel good, especially when they haven't heard anything from the coach that is ditching them.
Thus ends the Illini men's head basketball coaching search.
Just when I didn't think it could leave me feeling any worse, it did.
I need a drink.
